What is Ornidazole?

Primary Uses (Antiprotozoal)

  • Amoebiasis: Treatment of intestinal and extra-intestinal amoebiasis (e.g., amoebic dysentery, amoebic liver abscess) caused by Entamoeba histolytica.
  • Giardiasis: Eradication of Giardia lamblia infections, which cause gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and malabsorption.
  • Trichomoniasis: Management of urogenital infections caused by Trichomonas vaginalis in both males and females.
  • Balantidiasis: Treatment of infections caused by Balantidium coli.

Secondary Uses (Antibacterial)

  • Anaerobic Bacterial Infections: Treatment of various infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria, often in combination with other antibiotics. These can include intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and respiratory tract infections.
  • Surgical Prophylaxis: Prevention of postoperative infections, particularly in colorectal surgery and other procedures where anaerobic contamination is a risk.

Side Effects
